 Chandragupta Maurya:

        Chandragupta with his heroism and Chanakya's political skills spread his power to other parts of India and tried to establish a sovereign power over the whole of India.  He ruled from Afghanistan, Peshawar, Kandahar in the north to Bengal in the east.  It also had power over western India.  He also ruled in Saurashtra and appointed a Vaishya Amatya named Pushpagupta as the national (governor) there.  Pushyagupta Sudarshan Lake was built by building a dam on the river flowing from Girnar mountain of Girinagar (Junagadh) in Saurashtra.  The Konkan, Karnataka, Maharashtra etc. of South India were also a part of the Magadha Empire.  In the northwest, as far as 26 western Gandhara (Afghanistan) regions were also under Chandragupta's rule.  Thus, the sovereign power of the entire Indian Empire prevailed.

                This road was rebuilt by Sher Shahjuri during his reign.  During the British rule, Dalhousie rebuilt this road from Kolkata to Peshawar.  At present this road is known as the national highway from Delhi to Kolkata.  (2) Bindusara (297 BC to 273 BC) After the death of Chandragupta, his son Bindusara came to the throne of Magadha.  Preserving the vast empire inherited from father Chandragupta and giving his gift to his son Ashoka can be considered as the greatest achievement of the same Bindusara.  During the reign of Bindusara, Prince Sushim was appointed as the National (Governor) of Taxila and Prince Ashoka as Avanti.  He failed to control the revolt in Takshashila during Sushim's time, while Ashoka successfully carried out this task and suppressed the revolt.  Bindusara did not conquer any new territory during his reign.  But maintained friendly relations with the Greek kingdoms.  He ruled the throne of Magadha for about 25 years.
